A very large crushed stone storage has made it possible to use solar energy to meet the annual heating, cooling, and hot water needs of a residence, with a parasitic power penalty of about 3500 kWh. Winter temperatures were maintained at 68°F (20°C) with 60°F (16° C) night setback and summer temperatures at 76°F (24°C). Occupant intervention was negligible. The extra cost for the system is readily amortized by the savings in purchased energy.
