The current practice for the design of egress systems in buildings in Australia is generally embodied in the Standard set out in Part 24 of the Australian Model Uniform Building Code. It is based on the traditional physical science models. The author is at present developing total model for egress that views egress as an open system constrained by numerous environmental constraints, both natural and man-made. The model attempts to link together cues, human behavior, movement and safety.

Current research related to the concepts of required safe egress time (human factors) and available safe egress time (resultant fire scenario) is discussed in terms of the progress made to date. The research is somewhat fragmented in the area of egress and human behavior. These two areas will be linked together in an integrated model that will identify the total egress time required to achieve a predetermined objective of safety. The model is being developed as part of a research project for the Australian Uniform Building Regulation Co-ordinating Council, and also as part of a Ph.D. program in the School of Architecture, Portsmouth Polytechnic, Portsmouth, England.
