This paper discusses one designer’s experience in the development and evolution of the intermittent fan terminal, which is sometimes referred to as the “side pocket VAV system.” This paper starts with the history of changing design concepts from bypass multizone systems to variable volume systems in the mid-1970s. It is primarily a slide presentation of the very first fan terminals and continues to show the changes that have taken place in fan terminals from 1974 to the present. Also discussed are the methods of control as well as problems encountered in development.
