Describes the site description protocols used in the Texas LoanSTAR programme, compares the protocols with those from ASHRAE’s Guide for Building Characteristics and DOE’s Commercial Building Monitoring Protocols and presents some possible uses for the site description information. States the comparison is intended to provide information to those considering the use of protocols for energy-monitoring projects and to provide insight into the relative usefulness and coverage of the three protocols. Maintains that the availability of data from the Texas LoanSTAR programme provides a unique opportunity to examine these protocols in an ongoing retrofit monitoring project. Experience with developing special protocols for the LoanSTAR programme has shown that it is possible to begin with an accepted protocol (such as the DOE or ASHRAE protocol) and add or delete items as needed. The alternative of starting from scratch is clearly not recommended.
