A system of heat pumps connected to a water loop is based on maximum transfer of heating or cooling energy. Each pump draws the calories or cooling units it needs from the water loop to heat or cool the premises it serves. Loop temperature is between an upper and lower limit. In the case of the Bordeaux 9,670m2 (104,000 ft2) office building, each heat pump is fitted below a window and services an office (313 heat pumps). An electric boiler, a water storage tank, and a cooling tower maintain the temperature between 16 deg C (60.8 deg F) and 32 deg C (89.6 deg F). In addition, 100 kW originating from the air-conditioning system of the computer premises are continuously recovered by the water loop. The energy and financial analysis shows that, providing energy is properly managed, this system is very efficient, as shown by comparison with a cooled double air flow system. The purpose is not to reduce the energy consumption or the electric power of the heat pumps but to reduce the running cost by taking into account variations in electricity cost during the day and throughout the year.
