An experimental study on the effect of a 90-degree elbow on the performance of a small forward-curved fan was performed. Relevant performance variables included fan horsepower, static pressure, and flow rate. Location of the elbow was varied from zero to three diameters upstream of the fan. Three orientation angles of the elbow relative to the fan inlet and three separate fan speeds were used in the investigation.

The System Effect Factor was calculated for the influence of the elbow on fan performance for the various elbow locations and orientations and fan speeds. An alternative method of presenting the performance data is also discussed.
