Approximately 37,000 CFC chillers still operated in North America at the end of 2004. The article makes a compelling argument for replacing chillers of the 1970s and 1980s with today’s more efficient chillers, improving the efficiency of auxiliaries (pumps and fans) through variable speed pumping and more efficient fan systems, and installing more efficient lighting systems. This article will add to the argument by assuming an inefficient central chilled water system (CCWS) and show the effect of upgrading CCWS components and installing more efficient building lighting.
