The U.S. economy struggled to recover throughout 2003 with fits of small gains and setbacks. At the end of 2003, it appears that the long-awaited recovery finally has arrived. Increases in gross domestic product (GDP) and the leading indicators throughout the year are beginning to signal some real strengthening of the economy.
