Construction and renovation activities can act as strong sources of particulate and gaseous contaminants in buildings, both during and for extended time periods after the activity. These contaminants can adversely affect the health and comfort of building occupants. Numerous construction/renovation-associated indoor air quality problems have been severe enough to warrant the vacating of buildings and the filing of successful lawsuits, creating costly and difficult situations both for the victims and for people responsible for the buildings and the construction activities.
This project was intended to address the problem of occupant exposure to contaminants during renovation and new construction. It had two parts. The first part involved monitoring of typical construction/renovation activities to determine the types and quantities of contaminants emitted. The second part involved examination of control strategies that could be used to reduce occupant exposure to construction/renovation contaminants. All of the tests in this part involved barriers that isolated the construction areas from occupied areas of buildings.
