Preface

This is the third edition of CSA Z259.2.2, Self-retracting devices. It supersedes the previous editions published in 2014 and 1998.

The purpose of this Standard is to specify requirements for the classification, design, testing, marking, and instructions for use with self-retracting devices.

Changes to this edition include the following:

b) new requirements for the leading edge test structure;

c) the locking performance test limit has changed;

d) a new test procedure and requirement have been added for aggregate energy absorption;

e) revisions to the requirements for marking and instructions. In particular, a new requirement has been added for marking of the maximum deployment distance;

f) revised and updated figures;

g) updated references; and

h) a new normative annex added for Class SRL-LE used as tie-back self-retracting devices (Annex D).

Scope

1.1
This Standard specifies the requirements for all self-retracting devices (SRDs) used as connecting components in fall-protection systems. SRDs are further classified in this Standard according to method of use.

1.2
The equipment specified in this Standard is intended for workers at risk of falls from height.

1.3
This Standard outlines requirements for marking products and providing instructions that will inform the worker of performance limitations, inspection, maintenance, and hazards associated with misuse.

1.4
This Standard includes self-retracting devices for personal fall-arrest systems that incorporate a means of assisted rescue following a fall-arrest incident.

1.5
In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the worker is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard.

Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material.

Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.

Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.

1.6
The values given in SI (metric) units are the standard. The values given in parentheses are approximate and are for information only. Unless otherwise stated within this Standard, all units have an acceptable tolerance range of ± 2%.
