A high performance school is an environment that is not only energy and resource efficient, but also healthy, comfortable, and well lit. High performance designs positively impacts K-12 schools with higher test scores, increased average daily attendance, lower operational costs and improved teacher satisfaction and retention. Unfortunately, older schools typically do not have this luxury of high performance qualities. Older schools lack efficiency glazing, advanced lighting controls, and sometimes very little HVAC control altogether.
This paper will show the effect of implementing various energy efficiency control measures in older K-12 schools through the use of computer simulation. Simulating the use of occupancy sensors, integrated HVAC control and operable windows (mixed-mode operation), and room setpoint optimization will verify not only an increase in energy efficiency but will provide occupant satisfaction as well as. Occupant satisfaction is based on space conditions that conform to ASHRAE Std. 55 and ASHRAE Std. 62.1.
