This paper documents in part the study that was conducted for ASHRAE Research Project RP-1650, which investigated the training requirements for sustainable high-performance building operations and maintenance (O&M). The study was conducted in three related parts, which include: a literature review of appropriate O&M practices for high-performance buildings and training opportunities, a survey of existing practices in the industry, and the development of learning objectives to establish appropriate training material for personnel involved in the O&M of high-performance buildings. The purpose of this paper is to document the procedures and findings of a portion of the first part, which included a literature review of appropriate O&M practices and a corresponding knowledge base required to conduct such activities for highperformance buildings. The paper concluded that high-performance buildings are characterized with the implementation and operation of state-of-the-art technologies that requireadvanced monitoring systems and controls for optimum operation. It was found that corresponding O&M practices place substantial emphasis on maintaining rigorous preventive maintenance schedules, optimizing equipment- and system level controls, and integrating the performance of these systems with other systems and equipment in the facility. Theidentified knowledge-skill-competencies (KSCs) for these systems and equipment prompt a shift in the approach required in the training of O&M personnel from component-based understanding to systems-thinking.
