This paper is presented in four main sections. Section 1 describes the overall solar-powered heat pump system and its various operating modes. A summary of the design analyses conducted and rationale used to select the module components; operating features, including working fluid, configuration, design arrangement; and estimated performance levels in the heating and cooling modes is given in Section 2. The seasonal performance of the various systems and estimated energy savings for various U.S. locations are shown in Section 3 along with an assessment of the economic viability of the system. Laboratory test results for the solar-powered heat pump and field test results for the chiller are presented in Section 4.
