The growth of building automation requirements has necessitated the use ofmicroprocessors and general purpose computers in the automation centers.Microprocessors used for field devices are also common. The central processingunit can be efficiently utilized if certain functions are shared by the fieldmemories. Discussions include the employment of an intelligent sensing devicewhich not only memorizes its own identity and characteristics, but alsoconducts analog to digital conversion tasks. The new concept in distributivefunctions enables the central processing unit to function most efficiently. Asbuilding automation systems expand, more and more routine functions must beshared by the field equipment so that the console equipment is not overly burdened.The sophisticated equipment may also be used as stand-alone sub-consoleequipment without the need of a central console unit. The economic advantageof addressable sensors is also impressive. The wiring of serial sensing devicesis, in most cases, much more economical than the divergent types commonlyused today.
