Renewable enrgy is growing and may cause problems for utilities when too much energy is generated or insufficient load is online to absorb the energy. Several utilities are paying customers to take wind energy at night using thermal energy storage. At the other end of the spectrum, thermal energy storage is a way to store solar PV when off the grid. This is especially attractive in remote islands subject to hurricanes and fuel delivery disruptions.
