Onboard cooling of fish and shrimp using sprayed, refrigerated seawater requires spray heads capable of delivering an adequate flow rate and uniform pattern over the surface of the product. Patterns for spray heads typically used on existing fishing boats were measured. Generally poor spray distribution (compared to levels shown desirable by previous research) provided one explanation for occasional spoilage on existing systems. A second series of tests demonstrated patterns for spray heads previously unused for this purpose. Two designs were shown to have a potential for providing adequate flow rates and for meeting a given list of criteria found desirable for spray heads used aboard fishing vessels. Typical performance curves were generated and can be added and scaled for system design purposes.
