The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the potential for using ethylene carbonate as athermal energy storage device based on: 1) analysis of its physical properties and comparisonwith state-of-the-art phase-change materials, 2) feasibility tests on ethylene carbonate forthermal energy storage by externally induced nucleation schemes, 3) the potential for usingmixtures of ethylene carbonate and propylene carbonate for coolness storage, 4) self-containedsupercooling suppressant design schemes, and 5) cost comparisons of ethylene carbonate storagesystem with paraffins and salt hydrates.
