This paper describes a newly developed technique for estimating heat-loss rate utilizing an infrared television system. A device called a heat-flow reference pad was developed that makesit possible to estimate quantitatively the heat-loss rate at the surface of a building withoutthe need for a conventional heat-flow meter to be mounted on the surface. The infrared measurementtechnique predicted heat-loss rates in the laboratory and field within approximately 12%.
