On July 20, 1969, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin Jr. landed the Apollo 11 lunar module Eagle on the Moons Sea of Tranquillity. Hours later Armstrong descended a ladder and became the first human to walk on the lunar surface. Astronaut Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard the command ship, Columbia, during the balance of the mission.
