This paper illustrates the use of spreadsheets in an undergraduate HVAC computer-aided design and analysis course. Software-generated examples are given for performance evaluation of cooling and dehumidifying coils. The performance is described in terms of the air and film temperature distributions along the length of the coil, heat transfer area, and water removal rates. The analysis is presented for a counterflow coil but can easily be modified to include other arrangements as well. The discussion throughout the paper is presented in the context of classroom use of spreadsheets in HVAC system design and analysis courses.
