Discusses the changing role of global optimisation strategies as the integration of DDC systems is extended to terminal equipment. Offers suggestion is about how the development of more powerful global optimisation strategies needs to be considered in the design of the mechanical equipment. Specifically, discusses four areas of global optimisation – of variable air volume airflow, of lighting level via dimming ballasts, of space temperature setpoint and of chiller and boiler operation. In each of these categories discusses a control philosophy employing global optimisation, provides sample control algorithms and includes a discussion of the implications of these new control strategies on the design of the mechanical components.
