Describes the ASHRAE award-winning Manatee Education Center in Naples, Florida, an elementary and middle school which includes 19 buildings and uses a chilled water and ice storage HVAC system. Describes how the ice storage system reduces energy costs by shifting summer and winter power requirements to off-peak hours, qualifying for incentive funding from the local electricity supply company and also permitting the use of cheaper off-peak electrical rates over its life cycle. Explains the implementation of ice storage technology and demonstrates the benefits of its performance by comparing three sets of identically designed schools showing the energy/dollar savings of ice storage as compared to traditional chiller designs.
