States that the adoption of BACnet as the standard protocol for integrating building control products has forever changed the industry and has opened the door to new innovation in building control technology. Describes the Phillip Burton Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in San Francisco, selected for the first large-scale commercial demonstration of the BACnet standard. States the project is unique because of its large size – 22 storeys, 130,000m3 (1.4 million ft2)- the involvement of multiple vendors and the inclusion of more than just HVAC control. States this project will significantly affect way the largest landlord in the world – the U.S. General Services Administration – will manage its buildings in the future. Presents an overview of the project design, the demonstration team’s experiences to date and recommendations for engineers and building owners considering BACnet in their future automation projects.
