Describes the testing of a variety of boiler control strategies in 11 multifamily buildings with single pipe steam heating systems. Boiler gas use and apartment air temperatures were monitored in order to assess the effect of the various boiler controls on energy use and indoor comfort. A model of the boiler controls was developed and used to discern the performance of the various control strategies. States the preliminary results indicate that multi-point averaging indoor thermostats are the best approach, except in cases where there is already a properly functional indoor thermostat with a reasonable span setting.
