RLP, Cundall, Transsolar, University of Hong Kong and Chinese University won the Advancing Net Zero Competition hosted by the Hong Kong Green Building Council and Swire Property in Hong Kong. The intent of the competition was to generate ideas and solutions, enhance learning and knowledge sharing, and push the boundaries to design future-ready buildings and retrofit existing building stock to advance net zero emissions economy by 2050. An existing plot of land with real site limitations was provided and a commercially viable 200 meters tall skyscraper was designed. This paper explores the use of transdisciplinary integrated design for a carbon neutral high-rise commercial building in a high-density built environment. We discuss the value, solutions, and challenges of transdisciplinary design for carbon neutral workplaces from a holistic systemic approach, exploring the design process for “Treehouse”, the winning design in the “Future Building” category at the Advancing Net Zero Ideas Competition organized by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC). Treehouse was designed as a highly adaptable future workplace for the climate generation that promotes an adaptive comfort approach. We explored ways to reduce cooling load and provide people-centric systems with smart controls to nurture low-carbon behavior and acceptance on thermal comfort by imposing naturally ventilated space to reduce A/C area. In addition, we also addressed the energy use in production and construction of the building. Design and materials were evaluated considering function, feasibility, and availability to identify solutions where whole life carbon is minimized. The design process sheds light on how purposeful, holistic, and participatory design can lead to adaptable and eco-effective solutions that approach net-zero. The building itself is integrated into the neighbourhood and helps educate and promote the changes in humanity and philosophy necessary to live a less carbon intensive lifestyle. Lifestyle of the society and efficient technical solutions have to contribute in order to overcome the challenge of 2050 and Paris COP21 Agreements. Many ideas and considerable thought have been given to this process and how the industry can bridge the gap. Not all of these may be successful but would serve as an excellent starting discussion point for the industry to go forward on. This paper will discuss the intentions, constraints, challenges, and tribulations on this road to net zero.
