A “figure of merit” was defined in order to compare spined pipe performance to other heat transfer surfaces (bare tubes, helically finned tubes, plate finned tubes). Comparisons were performed using three different bases – heat transfer per unit blower, heat transfer per unit frontal area, and heat transfer per unit weight. Generally, plate finned tubes performed better than other surfaces at large spacings, while the spined pipe performed the best at smaller spacings.
KEYWORDS: heat flow, pressure drop, cross flow heat exchangers, performance, comparing, heat exchangers, helical, finned tube heat exchangers, finned tubes, flat plate heat exchangers, extended surfaces heat exchangers.
