A closed-loop absorption system has been analysed for simultaneous cooling and heating using water-lithium bromide as the refrigerant-absorbent pair. System performance has been analysed for condensing temperatures in the range of 35 deg C to 100 deg C while keeping the evaporating temperature constant at 5 deg C and the absorber outlet temperature at 35 deg C. It has been shown that at the cost of a marginal decrease in the coefficient of performance (COP) for cooling, the condensing temperature can be increased considerably. This presents a distinct possibility of using the absorption-cycle system for simultaneous cooling and heating and thereby increasing the overall COP of the system considerably. Modified expressions for the Carnot coefficient performance of an absorption cycle for cooling and heating have also been presented. Results of the above analysis have been shown to be valid for practical systems. An absorption system specifically designed for simultaneous cooling and heating could prove extremely valuable in many applications.
