The cyclic losses of air conditioners are characterized by both start-up and shutdown transients . It is commonly recognized that the migration of refrigerant during the off-cycle accounts for most of the cycling degradation measured in the DoE test procedure . The major cause for a delay in reaching steady-state conditions upon start-up is the dynamics of the refrigerant (see Goldschmidt and Murphy 1979). It is-obvious-that-the state of the refrigerant in the system at start-up will have a pronounced effect on the first minute of operation. The behavior during shutdown is now analyzed, based on representative data from one unit reported in Murphy and Goldschmidt (1984). The start-up transients were discussed in Murphy and Goldschmidt (1985).
