Smoke management concepts and principles for large volume spaces are now widely recognized and published, but this was not yet the case when a novel life safety concept was proposed for a large shopping mall project. Computer models convinced the authorities that the concept might work, but only after visualizing the flows using buoyant smoke as a tracer were they convinced that it did work. Visualized flows were also helpful to the designers and installers in identifying and correcting weaknesses in the initial installation.
