This paper outlines a phased retrofit plan for the central chilled water plant at Sonoma State University. The plant has experienced many operational problems and is composed of equipment (chillers, pumps) that has operated well beyond its expected service life. Furthermore, the campus master plan calls for the addition of several future buildings that will tax the already marginal capacity of the system. The retrofit plan, which includes converting the distribution system to primarysecondary/ series-tertiary pumping, will enhance the plant capacity to serve future buildings, resolve existing hydronic distribution system problems, improve energy efficiency, reduce maintenance costs, and improve system reliability.
