Summer mold growth in schools is sometimes attributed to shutting off the HVAC systems for energy conservation. However, in half of the schools experiencing summer mold growth investigated by the authors, the HVAC was running, but overventilating or over-cooling unoccupied areas. This article says mold growth can be prevented by low-cost corrective measures and increased attention to preventative maintenance and energy management systems.
