Water heating energy use is second only to space conditioningin most residential buildings, and is also significant in many commercial andindustrial settings. In some climates and applications, water heating is thelargest energy use in a building. Moreover, quick availability of adequateamounts of hot water is an important factor in user satisfaction. Both waterand energy waste can be significant in poorly designed service water-heatingsystems: from over- or undersizing pipes and equipment, from poor building layout, and from poor system design and operating strategies. Good servicewater-heating system design and operating practices will reduce operating costsand can often reduce first costs. The information in this chapter is thuscritical for the sustainable design and operation of many buildings.System ElementsWater-Heating TerminologySystem PlanningDesign ConsiderationsEnd-Use FixturesDistributionWater-Heating EquipmentBuilding ApplicationsHot-Water Load and Equipment SizingWater-Heating Energy UseHealth and SafetyWater Quality, Scale, and CorrosionSpecial ConcernsNo. of Pages: 37
