Some of the often cited benefits of interior insulators include a reduction in energy costs, decrease in sound transmission, and the reduction of moisture condensation. A study was undertaken to test multilayer window treatments for thermal resistance and to assess the effects of installing an interior insulating window on the overall R-value with an R-value of 1.6 for the bare glass . The interior insulator was installed in two positions: 4.13 cm (1.6 in.) and 12.38 cm (4.9 in.) from the window glass. The relative amount of moisture condensation also was observed for the aforementioned positions and the bare glass. The results indicated that the addition of an interior insulating window affected significantly the R-value of the majority of the various window treatments tested. Window treatments with lower initial R-values were improved to a greater extent than treatments that had initial higher R-values. Condensation was reduced greatly when the interior insulator was installed.
