A technique of analyzing cogeneration systems is described using a public domain energy systems simulation program. The simulation, called TRNSYS, was developed for simulating solar energy systems. However, because of its modularity and flexibility, it is ideally suited for simulating the dynamic performance of cogeneration systems over any time period of interest up to and including a year. This paper provides an introductory overview of TRNSYS and how cogeneration systems may be modeled within TRNSYS. It provides a sample library of cogeneration component models and some case studies to illustrate the technique of analyzing annual performance of some typical systems.
