Reports a study of potential fire risk in atrium buildings in Hong Kong, using a zone modelling technique. A survey was done of the geometrical configurations of atria, and the general shapes were classified into three types. The fire environments inside were then simulated by the fire zone model developed at the Building and Fire Research Laboratory, U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). States that the predicted results show that the predominant cause of hazard is smoke, not the temperature.
