Describes computer-aided tuning (CAT) software developed for the tuning of proportional-plus-integral-plus-derivative (PID) controllers in a situation in which the transfer functions of the controlled plants are known perfectly. This CAT system eliminates the tedious aspects of tuning by conventional methods. The transient response method, partial model matching method, frequency-response method, and optimisation method are covered. All plant models are limited to linear systems and one-input/one-output systems. Controllers are limited to digital PID controls and on-off controls. Once users have the dynamics of the overall control system, such as the plant, controller, actuator, and sensor, they can easily get the optimal parameters of the PID controller and carry out numerous comparisons of the response.
