This paper reports on a validation and simplification exercise for a nonlinear dynamic mathematical model of a direct expansion air-conditioning plant. The distinctive feature of the exercise is that classical control theory has been employed to assist the model validation. In the validating process, the dynamics of sensors were also considered, which is seen as an important part of validating a dynamic mathematical model. Transfer functions were also derived during the validating process using classical control theory. These transfer functions might be seen as a simplified mathematical model for the plant and can be separately applicable in the design of an appropriate automatic control system. The exercise reported demonstrates that classical control theory can be used to assist in validating and simplifying dynamic mathematical models for air-conditioning systems. The technique used during the process might be regarded as an effective method for validating and simplifying a dynamic mathematical model for both buildings and their thermal plants.
