There are many environmental benefits to heat recovery heat pumps (HRHPs). These ecological advantages are often accompanied by economic benefits. Responding to a need to quantify these benefits, ASHRAE RP-656 (Cane et al. 1994) reported on the operating experiences of heat recovery heat pumps. A set of guidelines was developed based on these operating experiences under ASHRAE RP-807 (Caneta Research 1998). The purpose of this paper is to report on these guidelines and describe their scope, format, and some of the results obtained. These guidelines allow the user to assess different quantities, such as energy savings, water savings, chemical treatment savings, etc., with an actual site example given for guidance as to how the worksheet should be completed. Eight sites and worksheets are presented in the guidelines covering three broad areas of the field: simple heat recovery heat pumps, drying processes using heat pumps, and mechanical vapor recompression (MVR).
