This chapter provides a technical overview ofoccupant-centric sensing and control, including data collection and modelingapproaches. Focus is placed primarily on HVAC-related controls (e.g., wherezone temperature is set based on real-time occupancy and/or comfortmeasurements); in many cases, such control schemes also incorporate predictionsabout future occupancy and/or comfort states. In previous applications, suchoccupant-centric HVAC control schemes have demonstrated significant energysavings potential, of 10 to 40%, while maintaining or improving occupantcomfort outcomes (Ghahramani et al. 2014; Nagy et al. 2015; Williams et al.2012).COLLECTING REAL-TIME OCCUPANCY AND ?OCCUPANT COMFORTFEEDBACKIndirect Occupant FeedbackDirect Occupant FeedbackHybrid Occupant FeedbackState-of-the-Art Occupant SensingINTEGRATING OCCUPANT FEEDBACK INTO ?HVAC CONTROL SCHEMESModel Predictive Control (MPC)MODELING AND EVALUATING OCCUPANT-CENTRIC ?HVAC CONTROLSYSTEMSWhole-Building Performance Simulation ProgramsNo. of Pages: 14
