Architects and engineers concerned with maintaining a comfortable indoor space condition are interested in the solar and visible light transmittances of glazing materials and the total amount of solar energy admitted. So shortly after completing the work that led to the adoption of ASTM E-424-71, the solar energy transmittance of gray and bronze transparent sheet colors frequently used in glazing applications was measured. It was also decided to measure the visible light transmittance of these selected colors. Accordingly, shading coefficients were computed using standard procedures set forth in ASTM E-424 and the ASHRAE HANDBOOK OF FUNDAMENTALS.
