Occupants of highrise buildings are seriously endangered by the spread of toxic smoke in the event of a fire. Both past and continuing research studies on smoke movement and control used mathematical models and field studies conducted in buildings to assess the smoke hazard under various fire conditions. Techniques of smoke control have been developed to provide safe escape routes and refuge areas. Further investigation at the DBR experimental fire tower will examine the effect of fire temperature on smoke movement and the effectiveness of smoke control techniques.
