Recent furnace/boiler field test programs have reported a range of energy savings for vent dampers and other energy-conserving devices. A number of these findings may impact the present Department of Energy (DOE) test procedure for furnaces and boilers. A critical review of a number of published studies has found that the analytical techniques will tend to obscure the effect of vent dampers. Physical and statistical reasoning for developing new approaches to field test data analysis are given, and it is recommended that present field test data be reanalyzed with a different approach to assess the effect of vent dampers and other conservation approaches.
