Lowering the thermostat setting at night to achieve energy savings has become a subject of continual study. During World War II it was first found that fuel could be conserved if thermostats were lowered at night. Again, in 1973 when the price of oil rose sharply, a computer study confirmed the possibilities of saving energy with night setback. Yet the objections and the confusion surrounding the issue of thermostat setback have persisted. Now, with homeowners being called upon to develop “the moral equivalent of war” in regard to the energy crisis, this expanded study seeks to answer energy savings questions concerning night. day, and dual setback of the thermostat in a more detailed manner.
