Little is known about exactly how fouling affects air-cooled condenser performance in residential air-conditioning units. To study the effects of fouling in a lab, ASHRAE Research Project 1705 created debris like what is commonly found in home air conditioners. With that done, researchers could predict how fouling would affect new coil designs and more. The results were surprising.
