This paper describes the development of water barriers for use with both three-coat stucco and EIFS. System and industry needs that were not being met with existing products were determined. Major needs of the stucco system were end to shortage of skilled labor, reduction in stucco cracking, and improved water management. Major needs of EIFS were end to shortage of labor and improved water management. These system needs were translated into goal product properties. Tests on new materials and on wall systems to select the final product are described. The program produced a single material that is an improved water barrier in both wall systems. This water barrier is shown to decrease the cracking of three-coat stucco. When used in EIFS, the water barrier provides a drainage medium and, thus, provides an additional method of water management without requiring a separate installation step.
