This conference paper provides several examples of shortcomings in the design of high-performance buildings, found via the author’s own experience in conducting energy audits, design peer reviews, and building troubleshooting. A number of energy-reduction strategies sometimes overlooked in mechanical design are presented here, applicable in facilities ranging from commercial buildings to hospitals, industrial facilities to mission-critical data centers. Recommendations are given to address energy efficiency improvements without loss of space and with minimal cost consequences, especially if included during design but even in retrofit cases.
