The concept of using a one-dimensional approach for solving the freezing or melting processes taking place in cubes and long square bars is developed. The freezing or melting process taking place in a cube having a side-length of 2a may be approximated by that taking place in a sphere having a radius equal to 1.126a with a relative error of less than 21q. Likewise, the freezing or melting process taking place in a long square bar having a cross-sectional side-length of 2a may be approximated by that taking place in a cylinder having a radius equal to 1.066a, with a relative error of less than 12 percent.
