At the turn of the century, the most rapid advances in refrigeration technology were taking place in the area of small equipment for homes and stores. The individual contributions of the many inventors and small companies working in this area did not begin to have significant impact until the Federal Automatic Refrigerating Co. was formed in order to consolidate about 70 patents. About 15 years later Frigidaire Corporation began and it also was to have a significant impact in small system technology. Rather than use consolidation, Frigidaire emphasised research to overcome technical difficulties with such success that it become a dominant factor in household and light commercial refrigeration.
