The purpose of this protocol is to provideguidelines for minimizing environmental contaminationand human exposure of oil-type wood preservativescontained in pressure treated wood products. Thisguideline will assist wood treaters in adopting treatmentand handling procedures to reduce migration of the pre-servativefrom the wood and avoid shipment of treatedproduct that may otherwise have a tendency to lose pre-servativefrom the wood surface.

These guidelines apply to wood products pres-suretreated with oil-type preservative systems underthe jurisdiction of AWPA subcommittee P3. Thesesystems include the preservatives Standard P1/P13(creosote), Standard P2 (creosote solution),StandardP3(creosote -petroleum oil solution) and Standard P8(oil-borne preservatives). The related standards whichare a part of the preservative systems listed, includeStandard P4 (petroleum oil for blending with creosote)and Standard P9 (solvents for organic preservative sys-temsused as carrier oils for the oil-borne preserva-tives).

These guidelines should be employed in con-junctionwith a thorough understanding of the AWPATreatment Standards covering the treated wood com-moditiesand preservatives specified. There are sub-stantialdifferences in treatment methods for differentspecies of wood and preservative systems. Where theseguidelines may be in conflict with specific provisions ofthe AWPA Treatment Standards, the Treatment Stan-dardstake precedence.

This protocol should only be used after readingand thoroughly understanding the preservative productlabel. A guideline shall not be used if it contradicts aproduct label recommendation or if it is prohibited bythe product label.

These guidelines do not address the inherenttoxicological and environmental properties of the pre-servativesthemselves. These matters are under the ju-risdictionof the United States Environmental ProtectionAgency (US EPA).
