Air temperatures exceeding 175°F can occur at telecommunication enclosures in remote locations such as deserts because of ambient conditions and waste heat from the equipment. Temperature- and humidity-sensitive equipment such as repeaters and relays will not perform reliably unless air conditions are controlled. This article weighs conventional approaches as well as new innovations for this application. Approaches covered include use of exhaust fans, vortex cooler, Peltier cooler, phase-change materials and dc-powered air conditioners.
